Sheffield Children's Hospital
Usable green external spaces progress through the scheme, providing an oasis of calm for children and their families
Location: Sheffield, United Kingdom
Client: Sheffield Children’s Hospital NHS Trust
Architect: Avanti Architects
A series of outdoor spaces and podium courtyards have been designed with the architects, which closely relate to the internal hospital spaces for this part-new build, part-refurbishment project. The spaces help tie the new and refurbished elements in with the existing hospital estate, providing improved connectivity and dwell spaces away from the hospital environment. Planting to the boundaries also helps mediate between the buildings and the surrounding conservation area.
Extensive green roofs, including a substrate-based eco-roof which uses crushed building materials and wildflowers and a sedum roof, provide valuable wildlife habitat and help control stormwater runoff from rooftops.
