A series of new courtyard spaces woven through this historic hospital building, providing closer connections between inside and out

Location: Bloomsbury, London

Client: Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust

Architect: Sonnemann Toon

We are developing a series of courtyard spaces at different levels through the old Italian hospital, which is being redeveloped as a Sight & Sound centre for GOSH.  Their circular design reflects the hospitals original founder, Giovanni Battista Ortelli, who was also a manufacturer of lenses and visual equipment.

The planting is chosen for children and their families to see, hear, smell and touch, and to soften the boundaries with adjoining neighbours.  A series of specially-commissioned artworks will be positioned in key locations; these will have sensory and tactile elements, as part of the overall hospital themes.
